CONFETTI - 15
Antoni owns Confetti Magazine and decides it will host a competition for the most original wedding of the year. They pick three couples that are to compete for the prize of a house. This mockumentary follows the couples and the organisers preparing for the big day. Couples range from the tone deaf who would like to have a musical wedding, tennis players who are more interested in winning than getting married, and nudists who are not allowed to marry nude. It's one problem after another but the magazine has to pick someone in the end, and decide who is suitable for the front page.
Virtually all the cast's backgrounds are in TV, featuring people from comedies such as Green Wing (Olivia Colman) and The Office (Martin Freeman). The fact that they are TV actors is reflected in the script, and the fact that Isitt has filmed her shots as naturally as possible to suggest a documentary crew have just "caught" the action.
Confetti is crammed with hilarious moments such as the drunk Dad trying to learn some form of cabaret act for the musical wedding. It resembles a TV series in its characterisations, which works to its advantage as well as against it, and British audiences will be able to relate to its stereotypical characters. On the other hand the flaw is in the characters, as they manufacture comedy to such an extent that none of them have any real depth to them make them likeable enough.
Overall Confetti is funny and entertaining and enjoyable if you like The Office and similar realistic dry comedies. But it's slightly disappointing to get to the cinema and feel like you're watching a BBC comedy on a large screen.
Confetti is available to buy and rent on DVD on 18th September 2006 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
