SHORTS: C'ETAIT UN RENDEZVOUS -
To celebrate its 30th Anniversary, Claude Lelouch's breathtaking underground short film,
C'tait un Rendezvous has finally been released on Special Edition DVD. The film is a mesmerising breakneck journey through 1970s Paris, and has been shrouded in myth ever since its appearance.
Legend has it that Lelouch bought a Ferrari 275 GTB with the proceeds from his seminal Un Homme et une Femme, and then decided to use the remaining 9 minutes and 30 seconds of the film stock to film an un-edited, near-suicidal dash through the early morning streets. The unavailability of the film, plus the many questions surrounding it have only increased its appeal over time. Who drove the car? Was to Lelouch or a hired Formula One driver? And was the director really arrested when the film was first shown?
Either way the remastered footage is steeped in adrenalin. All the more amazing, especially in this CGI age, is its "verit" approach there are no effects and the film is not sped up. The car really is careering around the city streets at those screech educing speeds. The sense of time and place is captured beautifully and it is clearly an unrepeatable experience. And because of its tunnel vision simplicity it is an oddly hypnotic viewing experience as we speed towards, and then past, famous Parisian landmarks.
The DVD is perhaps lacking in features, and at this full DVD price it is perhaps only one for petrol heads or Lelouch completists. That said it is a very enjoyable ride!
