JOHNNY WAS -

Hiding out in a Brixton squat Johnny Doyle (Vinnie Jones) is trying to escape his past and is working to fit into the easy going groove inhabited by upstairs neighbour Ras (Lennox Lewis) a Rasterfarian DJ and friend who works in the local market. But things go wrong when an acquaintance from the past (Patrick Bergin) arrives in town demanding Johnnys help, and they go from bad to worse when he gets involved with Jamaican gangster Julius (Eriq La Salle) and his beautiful but troubled girlfriend Rita (Samantha Mumba).

The first time they speak, Johnny tells Rita: You dont look Irish, to which she replies You dont sound Irish. Its a nice exchange from screenwriter Brendan Foley, but Ritas got a point and Johnnys explanation that the Irish accent was beaten out of him at school this is Vinnie Jones were talking about just doesnt convince. Unfortunately, nor does much of the IRA back-story which is fuzzy and unlikely at best. If you can put plausibility aside, and its a big if, then you might enjoy director Mark Hammonds fast-paced, reggae soundtracked crime story, but many will be left cold by the violent conclusion. Jones leads a frankly bizarre cast with a respectable if inconsistent performance but what Eriq La Salle is doing here as a wannabe yardie whos really from Croydon is anyones guess.
